Chapter Thirteen
When we had gotten back to Wyattâs truck, he handed me his final two papers. They were good. Better than good, they rivaled something I would write and I prided myself on my eloquent way of writing a paper.
I had been so pleased with his progress that Wyatt proposed we spend all Saturday on a special date from the book.
Sage had wiggled her eyebrows at me suggestively and I had nearly hit her. Our situation wasnât like that, and all her ridiculous comments had messed with my head. Thatâs at least what I had determined when I was safely in my room on Wednesday night.
I simply had Sage in my head and when he touched me, my body pretended to react and my brain went along with the trickery.
That was it.
Simple and logical.
Wyatt had texted me last night and insisted that we start our date around nine in the morning and even asked for my address.
To say that my stomach was unsettled was an understatement. My parents werenât expected to be home, in fact, I checked that fact every two minutes with a constant watch out my bedroom window.
But what if they had forgotten something or had to come home for a quick minute? They would see Wyatt and I would have to explain.
Because neither of them knew that there was a dual purpose for our meetings.
And it wasnât that I thought theyâd be mad. No, I figured theyâd be thrilled ⦠at least my mom anyway.
Dad didnât want me to date, but Mom would eat it up and want to know every detail. But it was fake and that I didnât want to have to explain.
So, when Wyattâs truck pulled into my driveway, without my parents in sight, I sprinted to his truck and hopped in.
His eyes were wide. âAre you running away from a monster or just excited to see me?â
My jaw slackened, but words failed me.
âRelax, Marley. It was a joke, although, one might think it was the latter option with your lack of rebuttal.â
Speak, Marley. âI was just thinking about whether or not I locked all the doors, thatâs all.â
Wyatt cocked his eyebrow farther up but didnât respond to my statement.
In truth, I was more relaxed now that my parents werenât here, and Wyatt pulled from my driveway as quickly as he had pulled in.
I had no idea what we were doing today but decided to be casual and comfy. I wore my favorite stretchy high-waisted black denim shorts with the bottoms frayed from so many washes. As for my shirt, it was a light-colored salmon baby doll style blouse.
I shifted my attention to Wyatt who wore a hunter-green beanie, and a teal T-shirt with dark khaki shorts.
My eyes widened. âNew beanie?â
Wyatt absentmindedly touched it, then replaced his hand on the steering wheel. âNo, just havenât worn it in a while.â
âI like the color.â
As he glanced in my direction, he half-smiled. Then he rapidly tapped his hands on the steering wheel as he pulled over to the side.
